My parents, Jack Williams and Joan Brooks, married in 1946, just after the end of WWII. My father was from Manchester, but during WWII many skilled men were not drafted into the army, but were sent to work in factories throughout England. My father was sent to Burnley, where he lodged in a house on Bruce Street, next door to my mother's family. After they married, they remained in Burnley for a few years, but then moved to Chorlton-cum-Hardy (a district of Manchester). My father was born in 1922 in Hulme, Manchester, to Walter and Eveline Williams (nee Hulme). He had two older brothers, Ronald and Sidney, a younger brother, Harold (Hal) and a younger sister, Evelyn, whose twin unfortunately died at birth. My grandmother, Eveline, developed TB and died in 1931.
Uncle Sid was born in 1920. During the Second World War, he was in the Eighth Army in North Africa and fought in the Battle of El Alamein - he was one of Montgomery's "Desert Rats". He and his wife Eileen had two children, John and Elaine, but my cousin Elaine was killed in a car crash at the age of eighteen. The family emigrated to Adelaide, Australia in the 1960s. Uncle Sid died in March 1982, aged 62. My Uncle Ron was born in November 1918. He married Annie Bailey and the couple lived with Annie's mother, Rose Bailey in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester. Ron fought in WWII and was one of the soldier's on the beach at Dunkirk. He managed to get into one of the boats that had set out across the English Channel to rescue the soldiers, only to have it hit by shell fire. He had to swim back to the beach and wait for another boat to take him safely home. During the War, his wife Annie and her mother had both developed tuberculosis and died before Ron returned. |

Uncle Harold (Hal) also emigrated to Australia, where he became an Osteopath, but he returned to England in the early 1970s.
Previous Generation: My grandparents were Walter and Eveline (nee Hulme) Williams.
